How Mini Split Systems Work

Ductless mini splits are heating and cooling systems that work without traditional ductwork.
The system has two main components connected by refrigerant lines. An outdoor compressor unit sits outside your home, while one or more indoor air handlers mount on walls inside. These connect through a small conduit that runs through your wall, carrying refrigerant lines, a power cable, and a condensate drain.
For cooling, the indoor unit pulls warm air from your room and passes it over cold evaporator coils filled with refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs the heat from your air and carries it outside through the lines to the outdoor unit, which releases that heat into the outside air. The cooled, dehumidified air then blows back into your room.
For heating, the process reverses. The outdoor unit extracts heat from the outside air, and the refrigerant carries it inside, where the indoor unit releases it into your room.
Each indoor unit typically has its own thermostat and remote control, so you can set different temperatures in different rooms or zones. This is one of the main advantages over central HVAC systems.
“Mini” refers to the compact size of the indoor units, and “split” describes how the system is divided between indoor and outdoor components. Because there are no ducts, you avoid the 20-30% energy loss that typically occurs in traditional ducted systems, making them quite efficient!
